The two-week local superiors’ workshop at the East Asian Pastoral Institute (EAPI), Manila conducted by JCEAO ended last May 6, 2006. It closed with a Eucharistic celebration presided by Fr Nicolás. There were 23 participants from 11 different nationalities, all Jesuits working in the East Asia and Oceania region.
Most of the participants concurred that the workshop was really beneficial for their life as Jesuit in whatever positions they assume now, whether as local superiors with several years flying-time, or as a superior-to-be. They enjoyed the two weeks without any sign of boredom; they really made the best of it. All agreed that they learned how to become a better person, one who is willing to get involved in the mission of the Society. “I am relieved that as a superior I am not responsible for all picayune (something trivial)”, said a participant, after learning about ‘the person of a superior’.
The workshop covered areas on care of person, care of community, care of apostolate, and the practical administration of goods. They also had some practical notes on the administration custom in the Society, about the aged and the sick, and chemical addiction. Case studies, which have been prepared carefully, were subjects of animated discussions.
The success of this workshop is credited to Fr William McGarry, who has conducted four similar workshops before. The Jesuit speakers were also very highly appreciated. Fr McGarry humbly acknowledged the lively contributions of the participants. Another workshop similar to this was recommended for superiors who were not able to participate because of conflicting schedules.
