In August 2008, JESCOMEAO conducted a radio production workshop for Church media personnel in Micronesia organized by Fr Ken Hezel, Superior of the Jesuits in Micronesia. Fr Jerry Martinson (CHN), JESCOMEAO Secretary, conducted the workshop.
The four-day course took place in Palau and was attended by 15 participants from Guam, Chuuk, Yap, Pohnpei, and Palau, including the Vicar Generals of both Chuuk and Yap. At the beginning of the workshop, the participants shared their expectations, problems and productions. They discussed how audio programs can be used effectively for pastoral care and for promoting the values of the Kingdom through radio broadcasting, distribution on digital media, and access over the Internet. The rest of the workshop was a combination of input and production practice in geographical groups.
Beginning with audience research, brainstorming, program planning and development, the group went on to discuss and experiment with various program formats and script-writing. After working out program concepts and outlines, they discussed techniques for interviewing, for using music and sound effectively, and for producing creative and effective programs. The workshop ended with a presentation and evaluation of each group’s production, and a planning session on how to develop each region’s media ministry. Follow-up meetings will be held to monitor progress in each region.
