Macau Symposium on Fr Pereira

Categories: Uncategorized

A Symposium was hosted in Macau last November on Fr Tomás Pereira who died 300 years ago. Hosted by the Macau Ricci Institute, it was entitled In the Light and Shadow of an Emperor: Tomás Pereira, the Kangxi Emperor and the Jesuit Mission in China.

Fr Pereira was a friend and teacher of Kangxi Chinese Emperor who issued the Edict of Toleration allowing missionaries to preach in China and for Chinese to become Christians. After the Chinese Rites Controversy, the Emperor banned and persecuted Christianity in China. Then came the suppression of the Jesuits in 1773.
