Floods in Siem Reap

Categories: Social Justice

On 04 October, Fr Heribertus Pardjijo Bratasudarma (IDO) wrote, “In Siem Reap the floods started on Wednesday morning, but it came to the church only on Wednesday evening. The Siem Reap River that divides Siem Reap town was overflowing. Over half of Siem Reap town was flooded. Most parts of Old Market were flooded. The church was flooded from the water from the river and from the water that kept flowing from the back of the church from villages. The water went into my room since Wednesday evening. It was 18 cm deep last night. But Thank God, this morning it was only 12 cm deep. The sun is shining bright today. I hope that it helps to warm the people and dry the floods. This morning as I welcomed the people coming to the church, they told us that the floods were very high in their houses. In many houses the water was over the knees. In some houses the water was as deep as the waist. Thank God the water went down bit by bit. This morning the people told us that the water in their house had gone down. We hope that gradually the water will go in the coming few days.

The Home of Joy of MC Sisters has been flooded since Wednesday evening. The children were brought to the church. Some of the Sisters have been sleeping in the church for some days. Some others stay in the house to keep the house safe.

Yesterday afternoon our team visited 30 families, the victims of the floods in two villages bringing food packages to them. They were very happy. Some were sick because for some days they could not rest and they had nothing to eat. This after noon after the Mass and Catechism, our team will visit some other villages and see what we can do to help the poor, the victims of the floods.

Let us continue to pray for each other.”
