Journeying with the youth In the way of St Ignatius
Accompanying young people in the creation of a hope-filled future
Established as a priority by our Jesuit Conference in 2014 and as a Universal Apostolic Preference of the Society of Jesus in 2019, the ministry seeks to holistically address the human, cultural, social, and spiritual needs of young people, accompanying them so they can discern God’s will, deepen their spiritual lives, and respond to the needs of their communities through choices rooted in faith and justice.
The ministry comes under the banner of Magis, meaning “more” or “greater” in Latin, and reflects the Ignatian call to seek greater love, service, and commitment to Christ, others, and all of creation.
Magis formation programmes comprise workshops and practical training in the Ignatian tradition, including methods of spiritual accompaniment, empathetic listening, and spiritual conversations. Local Magis youth formation programmes happen frequently within the provinces and regions, while Magis Asia Pacific gatherings are held annually.
Magis events typically involve the celebration of Mass, daily morning prayer, examen, group sharing in Magis circles, and several days of “experiments” or small-group experiences focused on spirituality, ecology, arts, culture, and pilgrimage.
Every four years, a global Magis event is organised by the Society of Jesus in the days leading up to World Youth Day (WYD). These gatherings provide a unique space for young adults from the Ignatian family worldwide to come together for spiritual formation, cultural exchange, and service, deepening their faith and sense of mission before joining the larger WYD celebration.
