R.I.P. Fr. Apolinaris Thall, SJ

On Sunday evening, September 4, 2005, while he was doing sport, playing tennis, Fr. Apolinaris Thall, SJ, a Jesuit from Yap, in Micronesia, fell down and then passed away.

He was born in Juli 23, 1950, entered the Society in June 1, 1973. After some years of formation to the priesthood, he was ordained in September 4, 1983. His last assignment was as the Parish Priest of St. Mary and Joseph parish in Yap Island. We are all very sad that we are losing a Yapist Jesuit. May the good Lord receive his soul in eternal peace.

Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities-East Asia and Oceania

The annual meeting of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities – East Asia and Oceania was held at Fu Jen University in Taiwan from August 23 to 25. Fr. Adolfo Nicolas attended the first day of the meeting sharing with the participants his view of the mission of higher education in the Assistancy and especially the need for research in all apostolic areas leading to greater depth in our work.

JESCOMEAO Meeting

The participants of JESCOMEAO MEETING have been arriving in Manila and they are accomodated in different houses in the Ateneo compound. Fr. Thomas Rochford, the Secretary of Communication in the Curia Rome has also arrived. The meeting will start on Tuesday morning, September 6, 2005, will end on Thursday evening. They want to find ways how to effectively use the media for achieving the goals of the mission of the Society in our todays world.

KOREA a new province

This coming September 1, 2005, in a mass presided by Fr. General, Korea will be proclaimed as a new province, becomes the 82nd Province of the Society of Jesus. The decree of which was already signed on August 15 in Rome. The mission of Korea was established and entrusted to the Province of Wisconsin, on February 25, 1955. This years is the celebration of 50 years of Jesuits presence in Korea in modern times.

Meeting of Major Superiors. 11-14 July 2005, Chuuk, Micronesia

The major superiors began arriving at the Chuuk airport on July 8. As a custom, young girls welcomed the guests with flower garlands. From July 11-14, the Major Superiors had their meeting at Xavier High School. It was a very memorable meeting, well prepared by the local team, under the direction of Fr. Kenneth Hezel, the Major Superior, and Fr. Arthur Leger, the director of the school. After the meeting, the majority of the Superiors stayed for two more days getting to know the activities of the local church, visiting a neighboring island, and attending an ordination of a local diocesan priest at the Cathedral of Chuuk.
