JCAP 2020 annual report now available online

A most significant event for the Society of Jesus was the release of the Universal Apostolic Preferences (UAP) in February 2019. In that spirit, this year’s annual report highlights the modest strides the Jesuits in Asia Pacific have been taking in assimilating and implementing the preferences – a task to last the next 10 years.

Fr Tom Benz SJ reflects on the process of the Ignatian Spirituality Network in discerning the “hungers” that JCAP can “feed” along the first UAP on Showing the Way to God through the Spiritual Exercises and Discernment. Sr Denise Coghlan RSM looks back on Banteay Prieb’s nearly three decades of history in Walking with the Excluded and the Marginalised now that the centre has reached a crossroad with the Cambodian government. In a similar way, Dr So Ying-lun writes about the past, present and future of Wah Yan College as the school celebrates 100 years of Accompanying Young People in the Creation of a Hope-filled Future. Sylvia Miclat underlines the need for urgency, depth and a more active response to JCAP’s identified priorities on ecology and migration given the UAP direction on Caring for Our Common Home.

All these are stories of hope. The world today faces a tough time, but we continue to find our path with hope. Fr General Arturo Sosa’s third visit to Asia and Pope Francis’ 32nd Apostolic Journey to Thailand and Japan give us energy and inspiration to proceed. JCAP President Fr Tony Moreno SJ writes in his message: “We continue to discern future possibilities for our world. We will never be content with the status quo for as long as God invites us to other possibilities… We need to find the little path that hopefully can enable us to imagine another world.”
