Filipino Jesuits profess Final Vows on the Feast of Mary

Fr Francisco Parilla SJ makes his Final Vows in Fordham University, New York

On the Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Society of Jesus, two priests from opposite ends of the globe marked significant milestones in their Jesuit lives by professing their Final Vows in the Society of Jesus in separate ceremonies on 22 April.

In the heart of New York City, within the confines of the St Robert Bellarmine Chapel at the Spellman Jesuit Community, Fordham University’s Rose Hill Campus in the Bronx, Fr Francisco Parilla SJ solemnly professed his Final Vows amidst a gathering of fellow Jesuits. Fr Thomas Regan SJ, Superior of the Fordham Jesuit community, received his vows on behalf of Fr General Arturo Sosa SJ.

Simultaneously, thousands of miles away in Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines, another celebration of vows unfolded within the chapel of the St John Vianney Theological Seminary. Fr Ruben “JR” Orbeta Jr SJ pronounced his Final Vows before his peers and mentors, including Philippine Provincial Fr Xavier L Olin SJ, who received his vows on behalf of the Father General.

In professing their Final Vows, Fr Parilla and Fr Orbeta have been fully incorporated into the universal Society of Jesus. They are called to honour not only their personal calling but also the enduring mission of the Jesuits to serve under the banner of the cross with compassion and humility.
