Returning to an old place with renewed spirit

By Pham Ngo Hoang Dung SJ

This year, we returned to the familiar setting in Pai district, where, three years ago, we held our Retreat on the Way. This time, we came back with 40 new students from different universities across Northern Thailand. The retreat kept its unique style – riding motorbikes and stopping at three prayer points, each guided by our speaker, Fr Joseph Nguyen Van Luong SJ At every stop, we reflected on our journey with God through nature, friendship, and short moments of silent meditation.

On the way, we were caught in the rain, which added more colour to our experience. We felt the shifting sun and rain as though they mirrored the ups and downs of life. Yet, we travelled together–and with God–which brought us so much joy and meaningful insight during the journey.

At night, we gathered around the campfire. Through indoor games, we had more time to get to know each other. We also shared our spiritual experiences through three drama performances, each based on the meditation themes at our stop points. Every group highlighted a different message: the importance of daily silent prayer, the value of nourishing the spiritual life, and reflecting on true love. The third group reminded us that love should come at the right time and with the right person–something that happens only when we find peace in our hearts, when we learn to be silent and attentive to God. The best way to reach this place of inner peace is by continuing the practice of retreat.

The Retreat on the Way serves as an introduction for students seeking a life of deeper meaning beyond the material and busy world around us. Though it last only two days and one night–from 6 to 7 September–it left a strong impression, opening a new door for students to explore their spiritual life through journeying, sharing, and friendship.

Building new friendships also became a sign of God’s presence among us. We travelled and lived together like one family: sharing joy on motorbikes under the sun, admiring the beauty of nature along the road, struggling together through the rain, learning silence and prayer, celebrating Mass, cooking meals, and caring for one another along the way.

Retreat on the Way is only the first activity of this academic year. Seven more projects are lined up, including a sports fest in October, a Laudato sí event in November, and a Christmas outreach in December.

Thanks be to God—and thanks to each one, especially our benefactors who continue to pray for and support our mission.
