The Chinese Province is now taking applications for the fifth Chinese International Regency Programme, which begins on August 15, 2012.
The Chinese International Regency Programme aims to make a concrete contribution to the formation of Jesuits with a more global perspective, for future wide-ranging missions. The international regents are also a concrete response from other Jesuit provinces to one of the five apostolic preferences of the whole Society: China.
In the last four years, the Chinese province has invested considerable personnel and financial resources in the three-year programme, which consists of learning Mandarin, the official Chinese language; studying Chinese culture; and, in the third year, full-time apostolic work in one area of the Chinese Province. After completing the third year and a thorough discernment with their major superior, the regents either return to their province for theology or begin theological studies in the faculty of theology of the Chinese Province.
“We have been attentive to provide a progressive initiation to life in China, going from strong structural community support in the first year to a more flexible environment in the following years, with ongoing personal care,” said Fr Louis Gendron SJ, Provincial of the Chinese Province.
More than 15 regents have participated in the programme and the fourth programme began in August with four new scholastics – Bruno from Brazil (Amazon), Romio from India (Kohima), Chris from USA (Chicago) and Miguel from Portugal.
The programme has been well received.
“The young Jesuits have shown a high degree of satisfaction with the programme; they have come to know and love China and Chinese culture, they have also found a great richness in the cultural variety of their peers,” said Fr Gendron.
