JCAP 2017 annual report highlights leadership development, youth ministry

This year’s annual report puts the spotlight on two firsts for the Jesuit Conference of Asia Pacific.  The JCAP Leadership Development Programme was launched in December 2015 and the fourth (and final) module was held in Seoul, South Korea in mid-May 2017.  The Jesuit Conference-wide youth ministry also began in 2015, with the core team pulling off a successful Magis Asia Pacific gathering in Yogyakarta, Indonesia from December 26, 2015 to January 3, 2016 and another during World Youth Day 2016 in Poland.  The next Magis Asia Pacific gathering will coincide with the 7th Asian Youth Day to be held in Yogyakarta from July 30 to August 6, 2017.  We also have a four-page spread of the top 12 milestones for the Jesuit Conference last year.

At the province level, we feature an overview of the intellectual apostolate in the Chinese Jesuit Province, which covers Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and Mainland China.  We also have an update on Xavier Jesuit School, the education project in Cambodia.

Last year was an eventful year not least because of General Congregation 36 in Rome.  In his message, JCAP President Fr Mark Raper SJ speaks of the vitality in the many educational initiatives in our Jesuit Conference and the promise to be seen in the participants in the Leadership Development Programme.  He also notes “The ministry among young people in particular is marked by energy, joy, depth.”

The Jesuit Conference of Asia Pacific continues to “row into the deep” as Pope Francis asked the Society of Jesus in 2014.  As Fr Raper says, “the winds and tides may not always be favourable, but our mission and hence our direction is clear, and we thank the many friends who row together in faith with the Jesuits in Asia Pacific.”
