In Cambodia, floods have scattered the hope of the people
As the floodwaters in Cambodia recede, the work of recovery and reconstruction begins. Fr Greg Priyadi SJ, Director of Jesuit Service Cambodia, reflects on the damage caused of by worst floods the country has experienced in years and the tough times faced by the people who have lost their homes, their harvest and their livelihoods.
Fr Bienvenido Nebres declared National Scientist
Philippine President Benigno Aquino III has conferred the rank and title of National Scientist on Fr Bienvenido Nebres SJ, for his outstanding contributions to science and mathematics education and social reform. The title of national scientist is considered the highest honour given to a scientist in the country.
President Aquino paid tribute to Fr Nebres, who was president of Ateneo de Manila University from April 1993 to May 2011, in a ceremony in Malacañang, citing his achievements as “educator, mathematician, mentor and administrator.”
New JRS Asia Pacific director
Fr Bambang Sipayung SJ has been appointed Regional Director of Jesuit Refugee Service-Asia Pacific. His three-year term begins on June 1, 2012.
Fr Sipayung replaces Fr Bernard Arputhasamy SJ who has served the region with dedication and competence for nearly seven years.
In his letter of appointment, Father General Adolfo Nicolás said that Fr Sipayung’s rich field experience will be “a great asset to JRS”.
Supporting Timor Leste
More than 200 people from St Canice’s Parish in Sydney turned out for this year’s annual dinner to raise money for people in Timor Leste.
Special guests at this year’s celebration at Bondi Surf Lifesaving Club on October 29 were East Timorese scholastics Dino Sarmento and João dos Santos, who are currently studying at Jesuit Theological College in Melbourne.
The two scholastics entertained the crowd with talks about their home as well as musical performances.
JRS Asia Pacific kicks off tertiary education project for refugees
Refugees and asylum seekers now have the opportunity to get a degree in European universities in 2012 with the launch of applications to the AREAS scholarship on November 1.
The Academic Relations between Asia and Europe (AREAS) is a mobility and scholarship project financed by the European Commission through the Erasmus Mundus Action 2 – Strand 1 programme.
“AREAS want to ensure that vulnerable populations under Target 3 category are well-served,” said Project Coordinator Bianca Buttiglione.
Applications open for 5th Chinese International Regency Programme

The Chinese Province is now taking applications for the fifth Chinese International Regency Programme, which begins on August 15, 2012.
The Chinese International Regency Programme aims to make a concrete contribution to the formation of Jesuits with a more global perspective, for future wide-ranging missions. The international regents are also a concrete response from other Jesuit provinces to one of the five apostolic preferences of the whole Society: China.
Second APTEP begins in April 2012, applications open
The second Asia Pacific Theological Encounter Programme (APTEP) will be held from April 10 to May 8, 2012. Conducted by the Indonesian Jesuits, the one-month programme on “Dialogue with Muslims” was first held in 2011. It was born from the positive successful immersion programme conducted in 2009 with 18 Indonesian Jesuit scholastics living in an Islamic boarding school (pesantren) for two weeks.
ACU online programme for refugees provides model for university educators
An online programme that provides refugees on the Thai-Burma border with the opportunity to study for a university degree is the subject of a chapter in a new book called Ethnicity and Race. The programme is the brainchild of the Refugee Tertiary Education Committee (RTEC), which was formed by Fr Michael Smith SJ from the Australian Province.
Spirituality in campus life
Spirituality is a vital part of campus life at Kolese De Britto in Jogjakarta, and the health of the spiritual life of the Kolese De Britto family is the main focus of its Campus Ministry.
So, when Fr Robert Rimmin SJ was assigned to work in the Campus Ministry in August, he asked himself “How do we give and share our Ignatian heritage to the member of Kolese De Britto family?”
He began by learning from others, spending three months in Pymble, Sydney to learn how to give and share Ignatian spirituality with different groups of people.
