St Stanislaw Novitiate celebrates 80 years

On its 80^th anniversary, Saint Stanislaw Novitiate, Indonesia, commonly referred to as Girisonta, offered a warm welcome to 11 new candidates and celebrated the first vows of 10 new scholastics.

The 11 candidates who entered on June 22, 2011 were chosen from 17 applicants in a selection process in early March. Ten came from various seminaries in Java, while another, who aspires to become a Jesuit brother, entered after having been accompanied by the Vocation Promotion team in Yogyakarta.

Discovering Filipino migrants in Algeria

Fr Roland Doriol SJ spent 15 years in Cebu, Philippines as a Chaplain in a maritime school and at the port, ministering to seafarers and their families. He sent us this report after three weeks in Algeria in May, during which he met Filipino migrant workers at their work sites and in their camps.

I cannot imagine my two years of regency went so fast. I still remember vividly how full of confusion I was when I first arrived in Timor Leste. Many questions came into my mind, basically about the work I would carry out for the next two years.

Jesuit appointed Archbishop of Luxembourg

Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Fr Jean-Claude Hollerich SJ Archbishop of Luxembourg. Fr Jean-Claude is at present Rector of the Jesuit Community in Sophia University, Tokyo, Japan. He was born in 1958 in Differdange (Granduchy of Luxembourg), entered the Society of Jesus in 1981 and was ordained a priest in 1990.

Students to be agents of peace

INDONESIA – A group of young Catholics, Muslims and Protestants in Yogyakarta have emerged from a peace-building workshop in July inspired to be agents of peace. They will be organizing activities to encourage interfaith dialogue and understanding such as visits to religious institutions and celebrations of religious festivals.

Helping indigenous youth develop leadership skills

PHILIPPINES – Indigenous youth from Philippines, Thailand and Malaysia recently participated in an intense workshop designed to help them learn leadership skills. Held in Davao from April 28 to May 20, 2011 the Asian Indigenous People Youth Leadership Workshop is a result of the Jesuit Companions in Indigenous Ministry (JCIM) meeting held in Chiangmai in 2010.

Living with our neighbours

An annual sports festival for the Thai and Filipino communities in Gimpo began on June 5 with the opening festival day at Gimpo YIUTSARI. YIUTSARI, which translates to “living with the neighbours”, is the Jesuit Centre for Migrant Workers.

The two communities have enjoyed the Gimpo Migrant Workers’ Sports Festival every year since the first event in 2006. This year, after the opening festival day, the Thai community will play soccer for eight weeks while the Filipinos will play basketball for 12 weeks.
