INDIA − Jesuits are known for striving to be on the frontiers, not just geographically but across ministries.   In India, Fr. Prashant Olalekar SJ epitomises this missionary spirit with his work with a “movement meditation” called Interplay in Mumbai.

A member of the team at Retreat House Bandra in Mumbai, Fr Prashant learnt about Interplay, an Eastern-based practice, during a visit to the United States.  He now conducts classes with Interplay India, bringing movement and dance to those seeking spiritual guidance and connections.

Jody Magtoto SJ was in Japan in May, helping in the relief effort for victims of the tsunami.  He reflects on how he rediscovered his Jesuit identity in the midst of the rubble.

I had been in Kamaishi for two days by then. Because I had taken some courses in Japanese, I could sort of understand what was going on. But I came to realize that because my words and thoughts were in English, I could not articulate what I wanted to say.  I decided then to keep my words to a minimum lest I offend or be misunderstood.

Although Fr Mark was recalling the words of his former superior decades ago, the statement remained valid in the missioning of Fr Lester Maramara SJ from the Philippine Province to Timor Leste.

Learning beyond the classroom in Mindanao

The third Hulas (the Pulangiyen term for training and formation) batch graduated in Bendum on May 28.

Led by Fr Pedro Walpole SJ, the Hulas initiative reaches out to address the skills and education needs of a growing number of indigenous youth in upland communities in central Mindanao, Philippines.  The youth are encouraged to bring their knowledge and learnings into their personal vision and to use these to help sustain their families as well as the broader community in Upper Pulangi.
