Telling the Story of Hope in Timor-Leste

Casa de Produção Audiovisual (CPA) is the only non-profit production house in Timor-Leste that regularly produces multimedia products in Tetun.  Its director Amelia Hapsari provides an update.

Each morning, the staff of CPA gather in a circle to pray. They are writers, cameramen, editors and animators who have been trained in CPA since the dawn of the young country. The task on their shoulders is both heavy and humble. They share hope through storytelling.

Chinese Catholic layman to be beatified

The Vatican has put a Chinese Catholic scholar who lived nearly five centuries ago on track for beatification.   In an Associated Press story dated April 20, Vatican spokesman Fr Federico Lombardi SJ, is quoted saying the go-ahead for the beatification cause for Paul Xu Guangqi, who lived from 1562 to 1633, was a “beautiful light of hope for China today and tomorrow.”

Jesuit centres collaborate on migration

Jesuit centres serving migrants came together round the table for the first time in a JCAP workshop held in Seoul from May 15 to 17, 2011. The 14 participants from Australia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, Japan and Korea included a representative from the Good Shepherd Sisters’ network.

During the workshop, the group heard from experts about best practices and learned from each other’s experiences. They also heard from migrants themselves.  Joint action was initiated to better accompany and prepare migrants as they move across borders.

New provincial for Chinese Province

Fr John Lee Hua SJ has been named Provincial of the Chinese Province.  He takes over from Fr Louis Gendron SJ.  He was born in 1966, entered the Society of Jesus in 1992 and ordained a priest in 2002.

Fr. John will begin his new mission on January 1, 2012.  He will take a sabbatical from August 1 to the end of the year to rest and to prepare himself for his new mission.

JRS marks World Refugee Day

June 20 was World Refugee Day, a day that puts the spotlight on the plight of refugees and highlights how they can be treated with dignity and humanity.  This year, World Refugee Day coincides with the 60th anniversary  of the United Nations Refugee Convention, which outlines the rights of refugees and the responsibilities of people hosting them.

Jesuit Education in Timor Leste

The Society of Jesus has administered Colégio de São José at the request of the Bishop of Dili since 1993. However, CSJ is and continues to be a school of the Diocese of Dili.  Direction of CSJ will revert to the Dili Diocese at the end of 2011, but our work in education in Timor Leste will continue.  

Fr Mark Raper SJ has issued a statement in Timor Leste regarding the Society’s position on Jesuit education in the country.

A Lahu community rebuilds

fire aftermathOn April 17, 2011, the Lahu community at Chaka in northern Thailand watched in horror as five of the seven houses in their village as well as the rice barns burned to the ground. It was a devastating loss for the 450 villagers, most of whom are farmers engaged in rotation farming of hill rice.  Some tend to their cattle while some of the young engage in the seasonal picking of lychee and longgan in the orchards in Chiangmai.

Although I have lived in Cambodia for two years, I lost any tolerance I had developed to its heat after only a month of Korean winter holiday.  I came back to this country in the middle of the dry season, the hottest, dustiest time of the year. 

The day after my return, and with barely any time to clean my room, I joined the female students and members of the staff on an Angkor Wat tour to celebrate International Women’s Day. 

It was in the quiet moments of the long bus ride that I found myself asking, “What made me want to come back here?”
