IRIN Films, in association with the UN Environment Programme, is pleased to announce the launch of three more short films as part of our ongoing series on the human cost of climate change.

Focusing on Asia, these high definition videos highlight the threat to Vietnam’s coastal mangrove forests, the dwindling fish stocks of Southeast Asia’s largest freshwater lake, and the innovative introduction of floating schools to flood-prone Bangladesh.

Manila to Copenhagen, via Myanmar and Louisiana

Flooding in Manila is not a surprise and the extent of it should not be surprising either if we pay any attention to what we are hearing about climate change every day. The problem is we don’t know where it will hit exactly and how and when. Though there is much local adaptation, many people still get caught unfortunately in deadly circumstances. We do not adequately know our landscape and susceptibility to flooding and we are not adequately relocating peoples’ lives and livelihoods. People in Manila might be led to believe this is the worst, but we are far from it.

The Conference Coordinator for Buddhist-Christian Dialogue, Fr Cyril Veliath (JPN), has been quite busy with video production. Here are the links to his lecture series on Buddhism and Christianity. Each lecture is about 8 – 10 minutes in duration. Fr Veliath gave much effort to keep them as simple and interesting as possible so that many may profit from these lectures.

Interview with Father General

During the month of July, as mentioned in previous editions of the S.J. Electronic Information Service, Father General made two important trips. One of them was in Asia where he visited the Philippines, (the occasion was the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the return of the Jesuits to the country), and Indonesia, for the 150th anniversary of the “modern” presence of the Society of Jesus in that nation. We present here his responses to our questions.

A statue in China. Father Peter Wang Leizhen decided to erect a statue in honour of Matteo Ricci, on the occasion of 400th anniversary of his death in a parish near Nanchang, capital of Jiangxi, East China. Father Leizhen is the first resident priest in this area in 40 years. The statue will be place in the spot where, according to tradition, the missionary lived for some time around 1595. The statue is expected to be placed next October in the garden of the church of Xuposhan, a village at about one hour trip drive from Nanchang.

Jesuits in Cambodia gather for days of reflection, sharing and celebration

All the 20 Jesuits working in Cambodia; behind them is the Jesuits’ and volunteers’ residence at the Banteay Prieb.14 priests, 3 scholastics, 2 brothers and a Monsignor – all the Jesuits in Cambodia – came together last July 31 at the Banteay Prieb to celebrate St. Ignatius’s feast day and also in thanksgiving for the 19 years of service of Sr. Denise Coughlan, outgoing Director of the Jesuit Service here.

All but Msgr Kike Figaredo (CAS), Apostolic Prefect of Battambang, were already in Banteay Prieb beginning on the 28th for some days of prayer, reflection and sharing before the actual feast day. This Jesuit meeting was a good chance for the younger members of the Jesuit Mission to get to know the community better and to learn from the wisdom of the community’s “elders.” It was also a good time to welcome the returning members Fr Rajat Purti (RAN) and Fr Kang In-gun (KOR), who is finishing his Phd in London. Both arrived a day or two before the gathering.
