ChrismCatholic communities are scattered around this Buddhist country. To give a greater sense of unity of priests with their bishops, the three dioceses of Cambodia held the Chrism Mass together in Phnom Penh at the Phsar Tauch Church on Wednesday, March 12. Bishop Emile Destombes (Phnom Penh Vicariate), Msgr Anthonysamy Susairaj (Kampong Cham Prefecture) and Msgr Kike Figaredo, SJ (Battambang Prefecture) led their priests in the celebration of the mass.

Fr Ruedi Hofmann (IDO) had a fall. The wound he received became infected and he was hospitalized to take care of it. The main concern was his being allergic to antibiotics. They’ve solved that problem somehow. Hopefully, by this time he’s back in the Jesuit residence.

Fr John Mace returned from Rome on March 13. He shared his impressions of the GC and gave a short explanation of the six GC documents at the Community Meeting on March 25.

Jesuit Refugee Service in East Timor

After re-establishing itself in Dili, East Timor in October 2007, the Jesuit Refugee Service embarked on a journey to provide emergency community assistance to the internally displaced people (IDP) in Dili. It was decided to start small due to the instability of the political and security situation. JRS selected six camps for the displaced people hosted by the religious congregations/Catholic Church, namely, the Fransiscan’s Convent in Taibesi, the San Jose Jesuit High School, Canossian’ s Convent and the Minor Seminary all in Balide, and the Canossian’s and Salesian’s School in Comoro.

The world has changed a lot for us here at the office of JCEAO since the General Congregation began two months ago. Suddenly we lost a boss – Fr Adolfo Nicolás was elected Superior General—and then we gained another one.

Jesuit Service Cambodia had a Team meeting at the JSC Reflection Center, Siem Reap from February 7 – 9, to reflect on the work done by this mission and to look at planning for the future. The meeting was a chance to “celebrate the past” and “look to the future with hope.”

EAPI Auditorium to be renamed Nicolas Auditorium

In a decision during a EAPI Staff Meeting held here right after Fr. Adolfo Nicolas’ election as the new Superior General of the Society of Jesus, it was unanimously agreed that the EAPI Auditorium will be renamed Nicolas Auditorium in his honor. Happily, it was pointed out that it is a rare and momentous event indeed that a former EAPI Director is elected as the Superior General! In related news, the EAPI Library is also being named effectively as Francis X. Clark Library.

Tertianship ends

The common tertianship ends March 8. Fr Bill McGarry (MIC) will leave the Philippines on March 13, in time to join the St Patrick’s Day celebrations in Pohnpei.

Fr Danny Huang’s new appointment

Fr Daniel Huang, Philippine Provincial, was appointed as one of General Counselors of Father General, and Regional Assistant for East Asia and Oceania. Fr. General gave him up to about a year to prepare for this new assignment. After the General Congregation, Fr Huang will go home, to tie up loose ends, but mostly, to set in motion the search process for a new Provincial. During this period, he may attend some meetings in Rome.
