On June 23, Fr Jerry Martinson (CHN) wrote: Many interesting projects here these days. Yesterday, I videotaped the first four episodes of a new TV series on some very moving stories of handicapped people in Taiwan. Next week, we test fly our communications course for Shenyang Major Seminary professors in China. Say a prayer for this one. The government authorities are being difficult lately. Our Adam Schall production is delayed a bit, but the script is getting better and better.

Eleven second-year novices pronounced their first vows at St. Stanislaus Novitiate, Girisonta, Central Java, on June 24. Together with three former juniors from Arrupe International Residence, Manila, they will start their philosophy formation at Driyarkara School of Philosophy, Jakarta, beginning in the new academic year in September 2007.

Pope Benedict XVI approved beatification of Japanese Martyrs

Tokyo, 01 June 2007. Pope Benedict XVI signed a decree approving the beatification of Peter Kibe and 187 other martyrs on June 1st, something which the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Japan has long been requesting the Pope to do. The date when the beatification will be publicly proclaimed and celebrated will be determined after consultation between the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Japan and the Holy Office in Rome.

Vietnam celebrates 50th Jubilee

The Jesuits of Vietnam Region will celebrate the Golden Jubilee of the return of the Jesuits to Vietnam (1975-2007) and the establishment of the Vietnam Province on July 14.

Together in remembrance of the feast of St Ignatius, a thanksgiving mass will be held in Hien Linh (Epiphany) Parish Church, Thu Duc, Ho Chi Minh. It will be presided by Cardinal J.B. Pham Minh Man, Archbishop of Ho Chi Minh Diocese.

Fr Zulo celebrates 50 years in the Priesthood

We all say prayers of thanksgiving for Fr Ismael Zuloaga (CHN), who will celebrate his 50-year priesthood on July 30. He was ordained on March 18, 1957. We fondly remember him as JCEAO president from 1992-2004. Currently, he is in charge of Alumni Relations, Xavier School, Manila. He continues to manifest his great love for China by helping quite a number of Chinese studying in the Philippines.
