60 years of Jesuit life and service in Korea

As they mark the 60th anniversary of the Society of Jesus in Korea this year, the Jesuits in Korea have been reviewing and reflecting on the past and the present, and will soon be discussing the future they see for their Province.

The celebratory activities began with a mass of gratitude at the Jesuit Apostolic Center in Seoul on July 31, the Feast of St Ignatius of Loyola. Then, on every first Wednesday from September to December, they held seminars to reflect on Ignatian spirituality, the Constitutions, and the Spiritual Exercises.

Two years after Haiyan … a new life

A new life. That is how Lilia Advincula of Barangay Calvary Hill in Tacloban City described her community’s situation as they commemorated the second anniversary of Typhoon Yolanda (internationally known as Haiyan) on November 8. She remembers that even before Haiyan, many residents had been jobless with a stagnant quality of living. The coming of one of the strongest typhoons in recent memory made life even harder, but the surge of support that came after enabled them to rise.

Taipei’s National Museum celebrates Jesuit artist Giuseppe Castiglione

The National Palace Museum in Taiwan has opened a major exhibition to celebrate its 90th anniversary and the extraordinary work of a Jesuit in China.  The exhibition, which opened on October 6 and will last until January next year, is dedicated to Giuseppe Castiglione (郎世寧), a Jesuit brother from Milan who lived for 51 years in the Forbidden City after his arrival in China 300 years ago.

Hopes and aspirations

The scorching sun may deter some people from venturing out of their homes, but not the hundreds of children hoping to get a place in Colégio de Santo Inácio de Loiola (CSIL).  They braved the heat, some travelling for an hour, to go to Kasait for the entrance exam.

In total, 278 candidates for Year 7 and 145 for Year 10 showed up, excited and anxious.  They knew that it was going to be tough getting into the school, not just because of the exam but also because there were many more applicants than available places.

After the release of Laudato si’ in May and the Jesuit Conference of Asia Pacific’s response in July, the Jesuits in Cambodia met to reflect on the Holy Father’s encyclical and how they can respond to his call through their ministries.

 

The Jesuits, volunteers, religious sisters, and Khmer collaborators of Jesuit Mission Cambodia welcome and support the latest encyclical of Pope Francis, Laudato si’ (On Care for Our Common Home).

Forming Catholic students in Vietnam

Although the Jesuits do not have any parishes, schools or universities in Vietnam, they have found a way to reach out to young Catholic students. In what they call their “pastoral ministry of/for students”, they provide, in church-based settings, classes on catechism, Ignatian spirituality, and leadership to help Vietnamese Catholic students become rooted in and widely apply Ignatian spirituality in their lives, and live a life of faith.
