The new President of President of Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan, Fr Roberto “Bobby” Yap SJ began his term with a strong message regarding man’s need to reconcile with recreation.
In his Inaugural Address on August 15, Fr Bobby declared that “care for the environment is certainly one of the most crucial and most challenging” frontiers a university can strive to reach, and announced two environmental stewardship projects he will focus on – making the campus green and adapting to climate change.
Xavier University has now established its baseline data for solid waste management program. Through the Physical Plant Office (PPO), a trial run was conducted for one week and also during the special event of Xavier Days in order to estimate the different volumes of wastes being produced. Now that some data has been gathered, the challenge is to reduce wastes of 9-18 cubic meter per week by 50% and reinforce waste segregation project in the University.

Recently, Xavier University had its groundbreaking ceremony at Manresa for their new CIT (Center of Industrial Technology), which is considered to be an environmentally sound building. This eco-building would serve as the model for other such buildings in the Philippines.
