Fratelli Tutti: The Dream of God for a More Human World

The Pontifical Gregorian University has published a book edited by Fr Danny Huang SJ and Fr Laurent Basanese SJ of the French Speaking Province of Western Europe (EOF).

Fr Huang and Fr Basanese both teach in the Faculty of Missiology at the Pontifical Gregorian University. Fr Huang is a former provincial of the Philippine Province and former Regional Assistant for Asia Pacific. Fr Basanese is a member of the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue.

Fratelli Tutti: The Dream of God for a More Human World is a compilation of reflections on the various paths of hope from the faculties, institutes, and centres of the Gregorian University given during a series of conferences held from October to December 2021 to celebrate the first anniversary of the encyclical. The conferences done in collaboration with Georgetown University aimed at disseminating and deepening the understanding of the message of Fratelli tutti.

According to the book, one of the key words Pope Francis uses in his encyclical on fraternity and social friendship is dream. “He begins with an invitation: ‘Let us dream then, as a single human family (No. 8).’ He ends with a prayer: ‘Inspire in us a dream of renewed encounter, dialogue, justice and peace (No. 287).’ To dream, for Pope Francis, is to practice hope. His goal in Fratelli tutti is precisely to take up and discuss many new paths of hope (No. 54).”
