Sophia University students arrived on 5 February to a warm welcome from the Xavier community, which oriented them to the campus, the surrounding community, and the programme’s objectives. Fr Vinai Boonlue gave a special session on ethnic diversity in Chiang Rai to provide students with a broad understanding of the various ethnic groups in the region and prepare them for meaningful engagement.
The next day, participants learnt about farming practices in Southeast Asia and took part in small-group workshops. One of the key activities was planting vegetables and trees together, which allowed students to exchange knowledge on environmental sustainability and build teamwork through hands-on experience.
In the afternoon, they visited a local temple and a nearby village to explore local arts, culture, and the everyday lives of the local community. A cultural night capped the day’s activities with performances by local students, showcasing tribal arts, traditions, and ways of life. Students from Sophia University reciprocated with a presentation that highlighted the celebration of cultural diversity and international friendship.

Though brief, the programme successfully engaged students in cross-cultural learning, enhanced their communication and teamwork skills, and built lasting relationships. The students from Tokyo described the experience as profoundly meaningful, deepening their understanding of Southeast Asia.
