Thailand’s Princess Sirindhorn inaugurates Saengtham College, Xavier Chiang Rai Campus

The Jesuits in Thailand are one step closer to realising their vision of establishing a university. On 27 February, Xavier Learning Community celebrated a significant achievement in their collaboration with Saengtham College with the official opening of the Xavier Chiang Rai Campus. Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn officiated the opening ceremony.

In 2023, the Catholic Bishops’ Council of Thailand, in partnership with Saengtham College and the Jesuits in Thailand, established Saengtham College, Xavier Chiang Rai Campus, with the aim of elevating Xavier Learning Community (XLC) to the status of a higher education institution within the Thai church. This initiative seeks to expand educational opportunities for ethnic youth in the northern region of Thailand and neighbouring countries, while also fostering various dimensions of development.

Currently, Saengtham College, Xavier Chiang Rai Campus, offers a Bachelor of Arts programme within the Faculty of Liberal Arts, with majors in English for Education, Religion, and Culture. In its inaugural academic year, the campus enrolled 30 first-year students, hailing from both Thailand and neighbouring countries, such as Laos and Myanmar. Additionally, the campus has opened a one-year English language programme tailored for seminarians and novices, aimed at equipping them with foundational English language skills applicable to pastoral work and daily life.

Princess Sirindhorn’s arrival was met with eager anticipation, excitement, and reverence. She was warmly greeted by a crowd of cardinals, bishops, priests, students, faculty and staff, as well as local people from the neighbouring villages.

Following the opening address by Fr Vinai Boonlue SJ, Campus Director, Princess Sirindhorn bestowed recognition upon 20 individuals whose unwavering dedication had significantly contributed to the development of the campus. Their recognition served as a testament to the collaborative spirit that defines the community.

The ceremony proceeded with the official opening of Nicholas Hall. In a symbolic gesture, Princess Sirindhorn also planted a Rain Tree (ต้นจามจุรี) on the campus grounds, underscoring the importance of sustainability and growth. This act resonated with the values of the institution in nurturing not only academic minds but also the environment. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me. I am so honoured to be part of it,” exclaimed Miss Meechair as she assisted the princess in planting the tree.

Princess Sirindhorn then took the time to engage with the students, browsing through an exhibition they had prepared, showcasing their talents and aspirations.  The highlight of the day was the students’ performance, titled “Power of the Dream: Wisdom of the Cross and a Ray of Hope.” The audience was enchanted by the artistic presentation embodying the values and aspirations of the college.

After the performance, Princess Sirindhorn interacted with the students, teachers, staff, and administrators, graciously posing for pictures to commemorate the occasion. She also signed a commemorative stone plate and received souvenirs presented by the college. Miss Jamriang offered her handicraft, crafted over more than 10 years. “I finally have a chance to present it to her,” she shared. “I feel so fortunate that she likes it.”

“With a grateful heart, I would like to say ‘thank you’ for this opportunity. I was nervous and knew it was beyond my capabilities to present the exhibition to the princess. Above all, I am thankful for this invaluable experience,” said student representative Mr Trakul. Miss Wassana added, “It took us weeks to prepare for the event, and we are honoured and delighted to be part of this important day. We did our best, and we are proud of it.”

Princess Sirindhorn’s presence at Saengtham College, Xavier Chiang Rai Campus created memories that will be cherished for generations, inspiring all to continue the journey of learning and growth with renewed spirit. Her visit will undoubtedly serve as a wellspring of motivation and direction for the years ahead. [Sumit Choemue/Thai Jesuit Region]
