Forming future Jesuit communicators

Jesuit Communications (JesCom) Philippines successfully conducted a comprehensive media production course for Jesuit scholastics in their First Studies (Juniors) at the Loyola House of Studies. Spanning one semester, from January to May 2025, the course equipped them with essential skills for communicating the Gospel through today’s rapidly evolving media landscape.

Experienced staff members from JesCom led sessions across a range of media disciplines. Drawing on their expertise and experience in award-winning TV, film, and AV production, Creative Director Pauline Mangilog-Saltarin and Production Manager Ernestine Tamana—producers of JesCom’s acclaimed feature film GomBurZa—helmed video production. They guided the Juniors through every step of the creative process, from conceptualisation and scriptwriting to basic filming techniques and editing.

JesCom Executive Director Fr Nono Alfonso SJ, together with Radyo Katipunan’s Station Coordinator Justin Pontino, facilitated the radio and podcast production sessions. Fr Alfonso shared valuable insights from his decades-long media ministry, emphasising the power of the spoken word and the importance of Catholic storytelling on modern-day broadcast platforms.

Digital Marketing Manager Joanna Armenta and Social Media Manager Idge Mendiola covered key areas of social media marketing, including platform fundamentals, content strategy, visual branding, audience engagement, and analytics. Their sessions provided the Juniors with tools to create effective, mission-driven campaigns that resonate across digital platforms.

These newly acquired skills were further enhanced through a session on clear and impactful writing led by Corporate Communications Associate Anthony Perez. Meanwhile, Paolo Antonio Gonzalez, an Assistant Instructor at the Ateneo de Manila University as well as JesCom’s Multimedia Training and Website Manager, facilitated a class on time management and productivity, tackling digital workflows, scheduling tools, and techniques for sustaining content creation without burnout.

Through a dynamic mix of lectures, hands-on activities, and group presentations, the scholastics deepened their understanding of media as both a craft and a vocation—one that serves the Church’s mission of evangelisation and dialogue with today’s world.

The Juniors who successfully completed the Media Production course include Ramon Lopez (Beadle), Jerome Maambong, and Juan Pablo Socrates from the Philippines; Zequel Noronha and Jonas Carvahlo from Timor-Leste; and Chanra Tieng from Cambodia.

As future Jesuit leaders and communicators, JesCom hopes that they will continue to proclaim the Gospel with creativity, clarity, and compassion.
