A precious trip to the zoo

Students from St Mary’s Kids Campus, the Jesuit-run kindergarten school in Lahore, Pakistan, went on a day trip to the zoo. The children’s joy and amazement at seeing the wild animals are captured perfectly in these photos—accompanied by witty captions from the staff.

A beautiful smile sometimes requires sacrificing a few teeth… Is life really this cruel? Why must we make a trade to have happiness?

How can you help someone if they don’t want to reach out, or if they already have everything in their hands? My friend, don’t be naive—just because you want to help doesn’t mean it’s easy.” “It’s hard to help when they already have everything in their hands.

Why do I have to become an animal to enter the zoo? Why must I become someone else in the eyes of others, instead of being myself? Why do I have to overprepare when entering a relationship?

Youth must be like a bird. Youth must soar. The home of youth is the sky, the open air. Why must a bird be trapped in the cage of prejudice, of control, of constraints? Why shouldn’t I, when my back is full of vibrant colours, be free?

Visiting the zoo is fine, but it’s tiring… anywhere you go is tiring… Does eating affect anything? And are we actually eating things from the zoo?

Look, are we in there? Why are we out here? That looks like us, doesn’t it? Why aren’t we amazed by what’s inside us, yet surprised by what’s outside us?

Go back to your forest, you creature. For you, freedom is outside this cage, but for me, my freedom is inside my own heart. How could our freedoms ever meet?

Line up, teacher; let’s go together. Be careful not to get lost in the forest, teacher… If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, we go together!

Bro, come here and join us! We didn’t come here to just watch you. We came to play with you—come here. Don’t stay in there forever!

Who will stand behind me when in front of me lies the whole sky of the zoo and a fathomless abyss? Can a tangible barrier hold back an invisible fear?

Nine people, nine lunchboxes, nine different meals, yet a shared comfort—sharing. Do we only share when we notice something unique in others and something good or delicious in ourselves? Can I share my flaws, my not-so-great parts, with others? Well, we’re just kids—who cares about good or bad, beautiful or ugly? As long as it’s my friend, I share.

Who am I in this pilgrimage? Who am I when I stand outside? Who am I when I look down the steps and tell someone else, ‘Be careful not to fall’? Ah, well, I’m looking at my own feet!
