The interreligious dialogue apostolate recently suffered the loss of two of its dedicated advocates, Fr Albert Poulet-Mathis (CHN) and Fr Bill Johnson (JPN).
Introducing Ricci to schools
The Jesuits in Ireland have published an education pack for Junior cycle religion and history students, as part of the commemoration celebrations of Matteo Ricci, who died 400 years ago. Click on http://jesuit.ie/matteo-ricci-for-schools for the 24-page education pack and a video on Matteo Ricci by Fr Antoni Üçerler. The Irish Jesuits have also produced a poster of Ricci.

Regents Experienced the Frontiers
Every quarter, the regents of the Cambodia Mission gather to break bread together, share stories, and check up on each other. While the primary purpose of the meetings is peer support, a secondary objective is educational and formative: the meetings afford the regents a chance to visit priests and missionaries in the communities they serve. Last September 2-5, all seven regents – Su-yun Park, Ki-Hyun Kim, Hyung-sik Jo (KOR); Tran Van Dien, Bahoc Pham (VIE); Arbind Beck (IDA) and Mark Lopez (PHI) accompanied by Fr Taejin Kim (KOR) – journeyed together to the hinterlands of Rattanakiri. This province is the least accessible area of Cambodia, lying in the northeastern border with Vietnam and Laos.

Last September 24, while he was visiting Japan, Fr Koichi Matsumoto (JPN) was hospitalized. He apparently suffered a hemorrhage in the brain and was operated upon the following day. Fr Matsu is the Director of the Arrupe International Residence in Manila, Philippines. Please keep him in your prayers.

In two separate letters, Fr General Adolfo Nicolás appointed Fr Colin Tan as the new Regional Superior of Malaysia-Singapore and Fr Joseph Pham Thanh Liem as the new Provincial Superior of Vietnam.
University Recognition for a Jesuit Centre in India

Sameeksha, the Jesuit Centre for Indian Spirituality, Kalady (Kerala Province), India, has been recognised by the Mahatma Gandhi State University as a Research Centre in Philosophy. Research students holding a Masters in Philosophy from any approved university can apply here for doing doctoral studies. Two Jesuits have been approved as guides, but the assistance of several competent Indian Jesuits can be expected.

After much activity in June as new members shuffled in, and old ones tried to find their usual rhythm, Arrupe International Residence finally found its footing in the month of July. Indeed, with a few exceptions, the manner of proceeding in the last two months has been ‘ordinary’. With the FIFA World Cup Tournament, which had for awhile arrested the attention of a sizeable portion of the community, ended, and school registrations completed, the community settled down for the semester in earnest. |
Xavier House–Ignatian Spirituality Centre, Hong Kong is organizing an Ignatian Symposium in December, in memory of the 400th anniversary of the death of Matteo Ricci. It will be held in Hong Kong from Dec 2-5. It will focus on three aspects of Ricci’s legacy in related to Ignatian Spirituality, namely, Affectivity, Cultures mediating God, and Apostolic Creativity and Leadership.
